AM2 practice: how to prepare and pass

The AM2 is the practical assessment that stands between you and being a qualified electrician. Here is what it involves, where people go wrong, and how to practise the parts that matter most — from electricians who have been through it.

What is the AM2?

The AM2 is the industry's practical end-point assessment for electrical installation, run by NET (National Electrotechnical Training) at approved centres across England and Wales. Passing it is part of qualifying as an installation electrician and applying for an ECS gold card.

It normally runs over about two and a half days. Always check NET's current candidate guidance or ask your centre for the exact format, timings and what to bring, as these are updated from time to time.

What you will be assessed on

Exact section names vary between versions, but every AM2 tests the same core competences:

Safe isolation & risk assessmentCarrying out safe isolation correctly and completing a risk assessment / method statement.
Composite installationInstalling a realistic mix of wiring systems, containment, protective devices and equipment to a specification, to time.
Inspection, testing & certificationInspecting and testing your installation and completing the certificate and schedules accurately.
Fault diagnosisFinding and recording faults on a test rig using a logical method and the right instruments.
Knowledge testA short online assessment on regulations and safe working.

The most common reasons candidates fail

  1. Safe isolation errors. Skipping a step, testing before proving, or not securing the isolation. This can end the assessment on the spot.
  2. Running out of time on the composite installation because of rework or poor planning.
  3. Inspection items missed and test results recorded in the wrong place or with the wrong units.
  4. Unsafe or untidy workmanship — poor terminations, damaged insulation, missing grommets, incorrect cable support.
  5. Guessing during fault finding instead of following a method and recording evidence.

How to practise before the day

  1. Drill safe isolation until it is automaticSay each step out loud: identify, isolate, secure, prove, test, re-prove. Practise the full test combinations for single- and three-phase. Our safe isolation guide lists every step.
  2. Learn the test sequence and what "good" looks likeKnow the order of dead and live tests, the instrument settings, and the values you expect — for example (R1 + R2) on a ring, minimum insulation resistance and maximum Zs.
  3. Practise filling in schedulesComplete a schedule of test results and schedule of inspections for a small installation, accurately and against the clock.
  4. Use a fault-finding methodGather information, think about likely causes, test to confirm, record the fault and the fix. Don't swap parts and hope.
  5. Plan the composite installRead the drawings and spec fully before you start, mark out first, and leave time for testing at the end.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AM2?

The AM2 is the practical end-point assessment for electricians in England and Wales, run by NET (National Electrotechnical Training). Passing it is part of becoming a qualified electrician and getting an ECS gold card. Variants include AM2S for apprentices on the electrical installation standard and AM2E for experienced workers.

How long does the AM2 take?

It is usually spread over two and a half days at an approved assessment centre. Check the current candidate guidance from NET or your centre for exact timings, as they can change.

What is the most common reason people fail the AM2?

Safe isolation errors are the classic fail — they can stop the assessment immediately. Running out of time on the composite installation, missing inspection items, and recording test results incorrectly are also common.

Can I practise the AM2 at home?

You cannot replicate the rig, but you can drill the parts that catch people out: the safe isolation sequence until it is automatic, the order of tests, how to record results on a schedule, and a logical fault-finding method. iZapp’s free 3D Testing Bench lets you practise safe isolation, every test in order and fault finding on a virtual board, with a timed AM2-style mock.
