Module 8 • Certification, Reporting & Exam Technique
Certification and Documentation

The three certificates

Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)

Issued after initial verification of a NEW installation or major alteration. Requires three separate declarations:

Designer — confirms design complies with BS 7671

Constructor — confirms installation carried out to the design

Inspector — confirms inspection and testing carried out and results satisfactory

On small jobs, all three may be the same person — but each role must be separately declared and signed.

Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC)

For minor additions or alterations that do not include a new circuit. Examples: adding a socket to an existing ring, replacing a light fitting, adding a spur. One signatory (the person carrying out the work). Not suitable where a new circuit has been added.

Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)

For periodic inspection of EXISTING installations. Produced by an inspector/tester — no constructor declaration needed. Contains classification codes (C1/C2/C3/FI) and an overall result (SATISFACTORY or UNSATISFACTORY).

Schedule of test results

Attached to the EIC or EICR, recording for each circuit:

Circuit description and reference

Cable type, CSA and reference method

Overcurrent device type, rating and Icc

RCD type, rating and operating time

Continuity results (R1+R2, R2)

Insulation resistance

Polarity confirmation

Earth fault loop impedance (Zs)

PFC/PSCC

RCD test results

Key exam points

EIC = new work. MEIWC = minor additions. EICR = periodic inspection.

EIC needs three declarations — MEIWC needs one

EICR result: SATISFACTORY or UNSATISFACTORY (C1/C2/FI = unsatisfactory)

Schedule of test results is a legal document — must be accurate
