Competence, responsibility and duty of care

The person signing documentation must be able to explain the process used, the limitations accepted and the meaning of the results recorded.

Key duties
• Work within your competence.
• Stop and escalate when the installation condition, design information or access makes testing unsafe.
• Recommend immediate isolation where a defect presents danger.
• Keep records that show what was inspected, tested, limited or left outside scope.

Exam angle
Use the language of safety, competence, due diligence and duty of care rather than vague phrases like “looks fine” or “should be okay”.
